The Chatham Islands |
 History: While sailing east across the Pacific from New Zealand towards the Americas, Vancouver’s ship, Discovery, and Broughton’s Chatham were accidentally separated, and the two ships weren’t sailing together when Broughton and his crew sighted Rekohu, which Broughton named after his ship. This photograph of a painting by an American maritime artist, Steve Mayo, depicts the Discovery and the Chatham (on the right) in Puget Sound (not far from where Seattle is now situated) and obviously not off the shores of the Chatham Islands. |
