Transport: Prior to air travel, of course, the only way to get to and from the Chatham Islands was by sea. This is a photograph looking down onto the wharf at Waitangi – the islands’ main harbour. The wharf is protected by a newly-built breakwater, which can be seen near the left-hand edge of the photograph. The breakwater was constructed using more than three thousand massive “Xblocks” that were manufactured on the island. Immediately beside the breakwater are sheep waiting to be loaded onto the cargo ship that’s tied up alongside the wharf. |
