Thursday, 5 January 2006 – From Swansea to Coles Bay: This is a photograph of a page in my 2006 diary. I kept a careful record of my cycling times, and wrote them down in red ink in my diary. Under each day’s brief summary of my ride, I’ve added Google Maps estimate of the cycling time for the route I took. On three of the four days (i.e., on 2 January, 4 January, and 5 January), Google’s estimated times and my actual times were very closely aligned. On 3 January – the second day of my four-day ride – I was markedly quicker than Google’s estimate because I’d had a strong tailwind. To this day I am proud of the fact that I cycled the entire way (in round numbers, 200 kilometres) without once getting off to push my bike. |
