Drakensberg mountains, July 1962

Most of the web-albums on the Climbing page of my website begin with a photograph of a flag. This picture of what was the South African flag at the time of the three Drakensberg climbing trips that I went on in 1961 and 1962 was the first-ever photograph I took of a flag, and little did I realise at the time that photographing flags would become something of a vexillological hobby! In the old South African flag, the large orange, white, and blue stripes stemmed from the original Dutch flag, while the three small flags in the middle of the white stripe represented the former British Cape and Natal colonies, and the former Boer Orange Free State and Transvaal republics.
