Drakensberg mountains, July 1962

Mont-aux-Sources is situated on the western edge of what was Natal (which is now known as Kwazulu-Natal), near the point where the Orange Free State, Natal, and what was Basutoland (and is now Lesotho) meet. In July 1962 I had only just qualified for my driving licence, and in retrospect it’s quite amazing that the mother of two of the people who came on the climbing trip lent me her car, so I could drive myself and her sons from Johannesburg via Harrismith to the Royal Natal National Park and back, a total distance of about 660 kilometres / 410 miles.
