Drakensberg mountains, July 1962

We left the Drakensberg mountains early the next morning and began driving back to Johannesburg. As the sun rose, I stopped to take this photograph of the South African high veldt. A few weeks later, I left the country permanently (and in the past fifty-plus years have been back on only three brief occasions). As a result, this picture of the veldt – with its tall dry grass, stunted thorn trees, and kopjes (i.e., hills) on the horizon – has been especially evocative for me. It’s a South Africa I’ll always remember.
