… a live prime minister: on Tuesday, 12 November, I saw the British prime minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, coming out of the front door of his official residence, 10 Downing Street. He had been prime minister for less than four weeks when I saw him in front of Number 10 (and the Welcome to Britain guide should possibly also have told visitors to Britain how to pronounce the prime minister’s name, because Sir Alec’s surname was pronounced “Douglas-Hume”).
