An attempt on Lobuje East, 1991



Introduction: These bank notes – each is for five rupees – are a reminder of the fact that in 1991 Nepal was a monarchy, with the world’s highest mountain on the country’s north-eastern border. Mt Everest is, of course, still there; however, King Birendra was assassinated by his son in 2001 and the Nepalese monarchy was abolished in 2008.
