Monday, 14 October 1991 – Based at Kyangjuma: Watched by Tenzing, Tarchen belays Rod up the rockface. As I noted in my diary, “Tarchen is a good teacher, but – frankly – the other two Sherpas, Rinzing and Tenzing, have a lot of natural agility and ability, but very little in the way of expertise when it comes to such things as using ropes safely and even knowledge of knots.”
