Wednesday, 16 October 1991 – From Dole to Machhermo: During the afternoon, four of us – namely, from right to left, Ralph, Dave, Eric, and I – climbed a small peak behind our campsite. I referred to it a “pimple” in my diary, but in reality it was roughly 4,800 metres above sea-level, which it should not be forgotten is the height of Western Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. This picture proved to be prophetic: eight days later we would go higher than any of the other members of our team on Lobuje East. |
