Thursday, 17 October 1991 – From Machhermo to Gokyo: We arrived in Gokyo at noon. It’s an attractive village on the banks of the valley’s third lake, which is called Dudh Pokhari (and which is often translated as Milk Lake). This is a photograph that I took looking down onto our tents, and across the lake towards the peaks on its western shores. It’s worth noting that the lake is 4,791 metres above sea-level: that’s more than a thousand metres higher than the summit of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki / Mt Cook. |
