Thursday, 24 October 1991 – Our Lobuje East summit attempt: Jon took this picture from the ridge where we’d rested and where he’d decided to stop. In the middle of the picture, you can see seven tiny figures making their way up to a small plateau. When we reached the plateau at 10:00 am, Tarchen told us we would be going no further. He argued that as only he had the expertise to lead everyone safely off the mountain, we had to go back down to the ridge where we’d split up and abseil down the snow slope we’d climbed so laboriously three hours or so earlier. |
