Thursday, 24 October 1991 – Our Lobuje East summit attempt: Tarchen joined three 50-metre ropes together and secured them to the snow slope with ice-screws. Given his back-country alpine experience, Rod was the first to abseil down the slope; we wanted someone knowledgeable and competent to check the knots that had been used to join the ropes. Ang Pasang, Rinzing, and Tenzing were stationed at the end of each rope so we could get past the knots without too much trouble. |
