Sunday, 27 October 1991 – From Thyangboche to Namche Bazar: We arrived back at the Namche Bazar Guest House at 2:20 pm – two weeks to the day after we’d left it – and it was, once again, our base for two nights. Before dinner, however, I went down to the Khumbu Lodge (which was near the centre of Namche Bazar, and which proudly displayed a sign pointing out that Jimmy Carter had stayed in it in 1985), and for the grand price of 30 rupees (a little less than one US dollar) had a shower. Not only was it my first shower for sixteen days, but – as I recorded in my diary – it was also “the best hot shower I’ve had since leaving Kathmandu, and it’s wonderful to be comparatively clean again.” |
