Climbing Mafadi

About three-quarters of an hour before Otto and I reached the top of Judge Pass, we met this party coming down the pass. The group consisted solely of black African climbers. This underscored the fact that I was in the new all-race South Africa. When Id previously climbed in the Drakensberg on three occasions in 1961 and 1962 South Africa was in the midst of its apartheid era. People of colour simply did not climb for fun, and it would have been impossible to have seen a party like this 50 years ago.
