Climbing Mauna Kea

On Sunday, 9 February 2014, Eric and I drove to and around the northern tip of the “Big Island” of Hawaii. This statue in Kapaau is of King Kamehameha the First. The statue was made in Italy and France in the late-1870s, but the ship carrying it to Hawaii sank off the Falkland Islands. A replacement statue was ordered and erected in Honolulu (it’s in front of the state supreme court). Consequently, after the original statue was retrieved from the Atlantic Ocean and eventually delivered to Hawaii, it was decided to erect it near King Kamehameha’s birthplace.
