Eric and I had headed north on Sunday, 9 February, because the Mauna Kea Weather Center’s website was forecasting excellent weather for Mauna Kea. As this photograph of part of the Weather Center’s webpage shows, Mauna Kea meteorologists were predicting a 0% probability of either fog or precipitation at the summit of the mountain during a period extending from Sunday afternoon, 9 February, through until Wednesday morning, 12 February. As a result, Eric and I had made a crucial decision: we would climb Mauna Kea on Monday, 10 February. |
