Higher up and later on (namely, at an altitude of about 12,000 feet / 3,650 metres, and at 9:25 am), because we were heading north, Mauna Kea’s south-facing slopes were in front of us and there was virtually no snow at all on them. We were wondering how much snow we’d see on the mountain, but – more immediately – we were pondering the significance of the pile of black rocks that’s immediately to the right of Eric’s head. |
