At a quarter to two – roughly a third of the way down the lava flow – we came across this sign. When we’d casually stopped for lunch on the shores of the lowest Emerald Lake, none of us had realised that we were still in the “Volcanic Flying Rock Zone”. Fortunately, though, Mt Tongariro was quiet on Tuesday, 12 February 2013, and we all lived to tell the tale. In this picture, Phil Killen (from Sydney) calmly waits for the rest of us to reach the safety of the non-flying rock zone. |
