Day 5 (Sunday, 20 September 2015) – Longtown to Hay-on-Wye (14 miles / 22.5 kilometres):
Richard Booth is the self-proclaimed King of Hay. Born in 1938 and educated at Oxford, he hated seeing people leaving their hometowns for the city, and wondered what could save Hay-on-Wye’s small rural economy. He hit upon the idea of the town becoming a second-hand book centre – and his inspired proposal was so successful that “by the 1970s Hay had become internationally known as the ‘Town of Books’.” Richard Booth’s autobiography is entitled My Kingdom of Books. |
