Rhodesia, July 1960

On Sunday, 10 July 1960, Richard and I hitchhiked from Salisbury to Melsetter on the eastern edge of the country. Our ninth and last lift for the day was with a local geologist, Mr Larry Watson. He not only put us up for the night, but the next morning he and a friend also drove us out to the foot of Chimanimani mountains. Then, to ensure we didn’t get lost, Mr Watson insisted that one of his African employees accompanied us on our climb up Long Gully and into the heart of the Chimanimani range. This is a photo of Richard and our temporary guide resting part-way up Long Gully.
