Climbing Mt Woodroffe

More than 100,000 square kilometres (i.e., almost 40,000 square miles) in the north-west corner of South Australia are Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Aboriginal lands. As this signpost at the border proclaims, “an entry permit is required to enter” them, and there are large fines for people who enter the APY lands without a permit. South Australia’s highest peak – Mt Woodroffe / Ngarutjaranya – is in the APY lands, which is why Eric Hodge and I (together with 25 other people!) joined an officially-sanctioned trip to the mountain.
