Camels were originally brought to Australia from India, Arabia and Afghanistan in the 19th century for desert transport (they played a significant role, for instance, in the construction of the overland telegraph line). By the 1930s, however, camels had been largely replaced by motor vehicles, and it’s estimated that there are now more than a million feral camels in the country.
