Half an hour later, though, as we sidled our way around and up the valley on the south-eastern flanks of Mt Woodroffe, we were – sadly but unavoidably – in prime spinifex country. Spinifex’s sharp spiky leaves contain silica which makes them stiff and rigid, and their spear-like points can easily pierce several layers of clothing. For good reason, spinifex is sometimes also called porcupine grass! |
