Climbing Mt Zeil

Ten minutes later, we arrived at a fork in the road (well, it’s really only a fork in a rough farm track). The fork is marked by a yellow tin can on a pole (which can be seen in the middle distance beside the tyre-tracks), and it’s near where most people who tackle Mt Zeil stop and look for a place to camp. It had taken us three-and-a-half hours to travel the 223 kilometres / 139 miles from Alice Springs. We’d read of someone covering the distance in two-and-a-half hours: Eric and I both felt it would have been suicidal to have travelled so fast on the roads we’d just been on.
