Humankind has been intrigued and fascinated by birds since the start of recorded history. For example, birds are an integral part of the creation myths of many tribes: crows, eagles, humming birds, owls, and parrots are just some of the species featured in stories describing or explaining the origins of ancestors.

One reason why we are captivated by birds is their beauty. Birds are among the most colourful of all the creatures on earth. When I was a child growing up in Africa, I was thrilled by and used to marvel at the bright iridescent colours of lilac-breasted rollers (even the species’ name is attractive, while its alternative name – Mzilikazi's roller – is downright exotic). One website has not inappropriately described lilac-breasted rollers as “one of the most beautiful birds in the world”. Even though many of the birds in New Zealand aren’t especially beautiful (many New Zealand species are practical shades of brown or grey), the shimmering blue feathers of a tui, the contrasting red-and-green plumage of a kakariki (also known as a red-crowned parakeet), and the lightning-like flashes of vivid red beneath the wings of a kea are head-turning and hauntingly beautiful.

Another reason why humans are fascinated by birds is, frankly, envy. More than ninety-nine per cent of the 9,700 species of birds in the world can fly – and that is, of course, something we cannot do. Icarus’ unsuccessful attempt to fly, a story told in Greek mythology, is still relevant today as a warning about the dangers of impractical or over-arching ambition. It is not surprising, then, that birds have been a feature in art for many thousands of years. Examples include Costa Rican bird pendant sculptures and Roman mosaics – and I’ve chosen a photograph I took in southern France of one of the latter to be my masthead picture at the top of this page.

My parents were very fond of birds. We always had bird books around the house, and more than 70 years after I first picked it up and leafed through it, I can still recall the name of one of the most prominent of them, Austin Roberts’ The Birds of South Africa. In the early 1960s, after living in Africa for 13 years, my parents migrated to Australia. In his unpublished memoirs, my father described something that happened a few years later:

“I attended a course of Bird Recognition offered by the Adult Education Department and learnt a lot from Len Wall. One weekend while I was taking the course, we were down at our cottage at Tinderbox. I was walking with a pair of binoculars up the hill behind our house, Mount Louis, and saw an echidna. I stood quite still and kept very quiet and was fascinated to see how efficiently it dug away the soil from under itself and gradually become completely buried.

“As I watched, a little bird came and sat on a projecting stump of a branch of an old tree and then it went into a hole in the tree just above its perch. I kept still and silent and then it reappeared and flew off and a few seconds later another little bird came and did the same thing. I realised that they were a pair of forty-spotted pardalotes. They were so near and stayed stationary for a few seconds each time they returned, perched on the stump before entering the hole, that I was able to identify them quite definitely. After five or ten minutes of observation, I went over to the tree and looked in the hole but could see nothing, but I could hear cheeping, so I realised that the birds had young in a nest and were busy feeding them.

“When I went to the next Adult Education lecture, I told Len Wall what I had seen and I could see from his expression that he thought, ‘Oh here we are again, a complete novice comes along and claims to have discovered the nest of a fairly rare bird.’ However, I told him that if he would come down to Tinderbox the next weekend I would be able to show him the pair and the nest site. He took me up on that and sure enough he had to admit that I was right. I think that until then the occurrence of forty-spotted pardalotes was unknown on the Tasmanian mainland.

“Len Wall has never forgotten that I 'discovered' the existence of the colony there, and Michael Sharland in his 1981 Guide to the Birds of Tasmania says: ‘There is also a small colony at Tinderbox, south of Kingston, where visiting ornithologists are regularly taken to see them.’”

In the mid-1970s, my parents returned to Africa. They lived first in what was Rhodesia, and then in South Africa. During their six years back in Africa, they became deeply involved in raptor trapping: catching birds of prey, weighing them, measuring them (particularly their wing-spans), banding them, and then releasing them. They used to send the data they collected to ornithologists at the University of Cape Town.

After returning to Australia in the late-1970s, my parents continued raptor trapping in conjunction with other Tasmanian bird-watchers, and I was once lucky enough to be able to accompany them on a half-day expedition.

My own interest in bird watching evolved initially from early attempts to photograph birds. I still have a couple of colour photographs that I took of birds when I was a teenager living in Africa. They were pretty poor pictures:

Six years later, while living in Britain in the late-1960s, I took a photograph of a chaffinch perched on the external mirror of Heather’s and my car, and I entered the picture – under the title Wing Mirror – in a photographic competition. My photograph (not surprisingly) didn’t win any prizes ...

... but it did lead to a determined effort on my part to improve my bird photography – something that I’ve now been working on for 45 years.

I have been inspired by Warwick Tarboton’s bird photography. Warwick was a year ahead of me at high school, and he went on to become one of the world’s great bird photographers. (If you’ve not seen his website – the URL is www.warwick.tarboton.co.za – then you are in for a real treat when you look at it.) My photographs are not nearly as good as Warwick Tarboton’s, but my aim has long been to take at least a few pictures that could, with luck, possibly stand alongside his. When I visited South Africa in September 2019, one of the things I did was visit Warwick (it was the first time I'd seen him since he finished school in December 1960). Warwick and his wife, Michele, now live in Kokanje (near Modimolle in the Limpopo province), and I was privileged to go birding with them. I also visited friends of Warwick's, Patrick and Marie-Louise Cardwell, who live in Simon's Town, not far from the Cape of Good Hope, and Patrick took me out on a day-long birding trip. It's little wonder, then, that during the three-and-a-half weeks I was in South Africa in 2019, I took many hundreds of photographs of birds, and – as a result – I am particularly pleased to say that pictures of more than ninety species of African birds now form part of this page of my website. The photographs I took in Africa are certainly not as good as Warwick's, but at least they are considerably better than the bird pictures I took in 1962!

The idea for adding a page devoted to bird photography to my website came after I read a small book by Gordon Williams (a former head of research for the New Zealand Wildlife Service). Entitled Birds of New Zealand (and first published in 1963 by A.H. & A.W. Reed), the book contains brief essays and photographs of just 50 New Zealand birds. The essays are interesting and the photographs are good. I enjoyed reading the book, and – while doing so – it dawned on me that I’d photographed about half the species featured in it. I decided there and then (i.e., in Dunedin in January 2012) that I would like to construct a webpage devoted to bird photography, and also that I would like to try to photograph all fifty birds in the book.

Well, the fact that you are reading this shows that I’ve now achieved the first of those two goals. I have decided I’ll post no more than three of my photographs of any one bird species in a country on this webpage. If, after reaching my self-imposed limit of three photographs per species, I take a better picture of a bird that’s already included on this page, I’ll replace at least one of the photos of it in my 'portfolio' with a newer, higher quality picture. The birds are in alphabetic order by country (such as New Zealand or geographic entity such as Europe). Where a bird has two names – for example, morepork and ruru – then both names appear in the index in the left-hand side-bar on this page, and clicking on either ‘morepork’ or ‘ruru’ will take you to the same set of photographs.

In the index, birds with an asterisk alongside their names are the fifty species featured in Gordon Williams’ book, Birds of New Zealand. I have asterisked only the names Gordon Williams used, thus – continuing with the example used above – only the name ‘morepork’ has an asterisk alongside it, because Williams didn’t use the name ‘ruru’ in his book. If birds listed in the index in the left-hand side-bar on this page are in brown type, it’s because they were included in Gordon Williams’ book but I’ve not yet taken a picture of them. I hope I may be able to do so in due course, but – to be frank – it's proving to be (as I expected would the case) a long-term challenge. Although I have, to date, photographed 46 of the 50 species of birds that appear in Williams' book, four birds still remain in brown type in the index with an asterisk beside their names. None of them is even easy to see, let alone photograph, so I've still a lot to do in order to achieve my goal of taking photographs of all fifty species.

I do hope you enjoy my bird photographs. I have spent many hours patiently taking them. Every minute has been both challenging and worthwhile.
