The Chatham Islands

History: … the arrival on the first Europeans at the Chatham Islands on 29 November 1791. Lieutenant William Broughton was the commander of the H.M.S. Chatham and – together with Captain George Vancouver, commander of the H.M.S. Discovery – was part of an expedition to explore North America’s north-west coast. (Vancouver’s exploits are commemorated, of course, by the name of Canada’s third-largest city.)
