The Chatham Islands

Life on the Chathams: In the late 1960s, there was a crayfish boom on the Chathams. Many fortunes were quickly made – and many were quickly lost. Crayfishing is now regulated and, we were told, sustainable. This painting of a crayfish is one of a series of pictures adorning a Department of Conservation shelter at the Ocean Mail Reserve on the north-east coast of Chatham Island.
