The Chatham Islands

Life on the Chathams: One problem that tourists on the Chatham Islands face stems from the fact that there is very little public land. As a result, visiting attractions – such as the basalt columns which are on the coast and thus are on public land – often means one has to go through private property to get to them. An individual tourist has to get permission to cross the private lands, and – in the case of the basalt columns, for example – pay $25 per person to do so.
