 Introduction: Ireland’s national banner – the green, white, and orange Irish tricolour – was first flown by Thomas F. Meagher, one of the organisers of the 1848 Young Ireland Rebellion. He was convicted of high treason and transported to Tasmania, but escaped from Australia to the United States and fought for the Union during the Civil War. |
