Day 11 (25 September 1969) – ROSKILDE: The remains of one of five Viking ships which had been deliberately sunk in the narrows of the Roskilde fjord in the 11th century AD to prevent enemy attacks from the sea. In an early – but telling – instance of how, in the light of the £50 allowance, Heather and I tried to reduce our expenditure, I wrote in my diary, “Charlie and I went in [to the Viking Ship Museum] for 2 kroner apiece (Charlie was under 21, self with a student-card), but Heather didn’t – it would have cost her 5 kroner.” |
