Day 17 (1 October 1969) – OSLO: We arrived in Oslo in the late morning. Heather and I were dismayed to find we couldn’t afford to stay there. The city’s youth hostel was going to cost us 17 kroner – the equivalent of £1 sterling – each per night, so Charlie, Heather, and I decided to spend the rest of the day seeing something of the city before driving through the night and back to Denmark. Camera-shake spoiled the photographs I took in the Bygdoy Viking ships museum, but this picture, taken in the neighbouring Kon Tiki museum, is possibly passable. It shows the sail on the hand-built raft that Thor Heyerdahl and his crew had sailed from South America to Polynesia in 1947. As a school boy in the early 1950s, I had been entranced by the black-and-white documentary film that was made about the voyage. |
