Day 26 (10 October 1969) – EAST BERLIN: The Brandenburg Gate as seen from the East German side of the border. The ‘XX’ fixture above the East German coast of arms in the middle of the gate was there because East Germany was celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the DDR – namely, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (i.e., the German Democratic Republic or East Germany). It had been formally proclaimed as a country on 7 October 1949, exactly 20 years and 3 days before I took this photograph. |
