Days 39 to 40 (23 to 24 October 1969) – VIENNA: The Soviet war memorial (formally called the Heroes Monument of the Red Army) was erected to honour the 17,000 USSR soldiers killed during the 1945 battle for Vienna. In front of the memorial is the Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain, which was erected to celebrate the city’s alpine water pipeline, but – as the ‘Visiting Vienna’ website wryly notes – “the two are purely coincidental neighbours and not an ensemble.” |
