In July 1997, I climbed Denali / Mt McKinley. Eight years later it occurred to me that as Denali is not only one of the Seven Summits but also both the highest of the US state highpoints and the hardest of them to climb, then climbing all of the thirteen peaks that together constitute the ten highest and ten hardest of the US state highpoints would be an enjoyable and interesting challenge. Having formulated a new climbing goal, I decided it would be sensible to tackle the hardest mountains on the list first. Gannett Peak has been rated the second hardest of the state highpoints to climb, so while I was on sabbatical leave in 2006 I took a two-week break and headed off towards Wyoming. |
