Climbing Guadalupe Peak, Texas

I then drove round to the nearby camp site and trailhead car park, where I witnessed an attractive sunrise. I am delighted to report that this photograph was published three weeks later on the MetVUW meteorological website with the following caption: “Sunrise at 06:50 am on 3 October 2016 as seen from the foot of Guadalupe Peak (2,667 metres / 8,751 feet), which is the highest mountain in Texas and is located at the edge of the Chihuahuan desert (which helps explain why the tall stalk of a yucca plant can be seen near the right-hand edge of the photograph). Because the day's weather forecast had presaged the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, I began climbing the mountain [not long] after taking this picture and made sure I was back at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park visitors' centre by 1:00 pm.” |
