An attempt on Lobuje East, 1991

Friday, 4 October 1991 – From Shivalaya to Bhandar: During the morning, we climbed from Shivalaya up to the top of the Duerali Pass, which is almost a thousand vertical metres above Shivalaya. We tackled it slowly: it took us about three-and-a-half hours to reach the top of the pass, where we had our lunch. During our lunch stop, Dave examined a porter’s extremely swollen foot and – using Rod’s Swiss army knife – made an incision in the man’s foot to let the pus out. As I recorded in my diary, “the porter didn’t flinch.” Indeed, he “set off before we did for Bhandar.”
