An attempt on Lobuje East, 1991

Monday, 14 October 1991 – Based at Kyangjuma: After visiting Khumjung, we walked over to Kunde (3,840 metres) to see the hospital that had been built by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1966 at the request of the Sherpa community. The hospital has often been staffed by New Zealand-trained medicos. When we visited it, the doctors working there were from Christchurch: Lynley Cook and her husband David Murdoch. (Incidentally, they have had stellar careers since working in Nepal, and David became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago at the beginning of 2022.) In this photograph, from left to right outside the hospital are Diane, Geoff, Rod, Ralph, Jon, and Dave (who, as a GP, was not surprisingly especially keen to see the hospital and its set-up).
