An attempt on Lobuje East, 1991

Thursday, 24 October 1991 – Our Lobuje East summit attempt: We left our highpoint at about 10:30 am and made our way back down to the main ridge, where I took this photograph looking down the 180-metre or so snow slope we’d climbed roughly four hours earlier and that we were going to abseil down. In the middle of the picture, about one-third the way in from the right-hand edge, the site of our advanced base camp – Hidden Lake – is clearly visible. Far below it (but seemingly above it in this photograph) are the milky-blue waters of a glacial lake at the foot of Taboche.
