In 1957 nine African-American students tried to enrol in the previously all-white Little Rock Central High School. The Governor of Arkansas used the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the black students from enrolling, but President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent in federal troops to ensure the students could attend the school. The clash of constitutional powers in Little Rock was a key event in the long-running post-World War II struggle for civil rights in the south of the United States. |
