Climbing Mt Meharry

This plaque near the base of the newer of the two cairns on the summit of Mt Meharry explains where the mountain’s name comes from: like Mt Everest, Mt Meharry is named after a surveyor. Incidentally, some 30 years after the mountain was named after Thomas Meharry, Gina Rinehart, Australia’s wealthiest woman, unsuccessfully tried to get the mountain named after her father, Lang Hancock. There’s some confusion as to the exact height of Mt Meharry, but given that the surveyors who erected the new summit cairn say it’s 1,250 metres (4,101 feet) above sea-level, that’s the height I’ve used in this web-album.
