We reached Camp Muir at 3:30 pm, where I took this photograph of Eric in front of our tent. Camp Muir is 10,030 feet / 3,057 metres above sea-level, and the climb from Paradise up through the Muir snowfield had taken us five-and-a-half hours, during which time we’d gained 4,610 feet / 1,405 metres. Mike Gauthier’s book, Mount Rainier: A Climbing Guide, says “most parties take 4 to 8 hours to climb … to Muir”, so I was reasonably pleased both with our time and my overall performance. Thankfully, my black and bruised big toe hadn’t caused me any trouble at all during the climb up to Camp Muir. |
