
The hike starts with an immediate river crossing in order to get from the Routeburn Shelter (which is on the true right-bank of the river) onto the true left-bank of the Route Burn. “Burn” is a Scottish word for river, so the words “Route” and “burn” should really be separated. However, for some unknown reason, the track is universally known as the Routeburn (i.e., one word) Track. |
