The Routeburn Track

We left the Lake Mackenzie Hut at 9:45 am on Wednesday, 1 January 1997. We hadn’t gone far when we reached “The Orchard”, which has been accurately (and informatively) described as a “natural clearing enclosing ribbonwoods resembling fruit trees.” Ribbonwoods, incidentally, are unusual for New Zealand native trees: they are deciduous (and fewer than ten per cent of New Zealand’s native tree species are either wholly or partly deciduous).
