On Friday, 3 January 1997, we drove from Christchurch to Picton, in the Marlborough Sounds, where Evan took this photograph of me in one of the Mikhail Lermontov’s lifeboats. The Mikhail Lermontov was a Russian cruise ship that hit a rock and sank in Marlborough Sounds in February 1986. I purposefully asked Evan to take this photograph because I knew that less than two weeks after he took it, I’d be lecturing on another cruise ship, the Marco Polo, during a two-week trip in the South Pacific, and that prior to its rebirth as an Orient Lines’ ship, the Marco Polo had been known as the Alexandr Pushkin – when it was a sister ship of the Mikhail Lermontov! |
