PORTRAITS OF POWER John Key |
|
On Saturday, 8 November 2008, New Zealand held its fifth proportional representation election. There was a swing to the opposition National Party of more than six percent, and as votes were tallied on election-night, it quickly became obvious that the National Party would be able to form a government. As a result, the party's leader, John Key, was sworn in as Prime Minister of New Zealand by the Governor-General, Anand Satyanand, on 19 November 2008. (It's worth noting, too, that when he became Prime Minister, Mr Key had been a Member of Parliament for only just over six years — less time even than David Lange had been an MP before he became Prime Minister in 1984.) |
