Climbing Mt Bartle Frere, Queensland

You can measure your rate of progress when you climb Mt Bartle Frere, because the Queensland parks authorities have fixed metal kilometre markers onto rocks and trees alongside the trail. After two hours and eight minutes, we reached the 4-kilometre mark (i.e., we’d covered two-and-a-half miles). Whereas we took an average of 28 minutes to cover each of the first three kilometres, we averaged almost twice that time per kilometre while ascending the final 4.5 kilometres to the summit.
