Climbing Black Mesa, Oklahoma

Oklahoma looked dry but not dusty when I entered it at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, 28 September 2016. The fact that the state stresses its Native American heritage is both laudable and, at the same time, somewhat ironic, because President Andrew Jackson’s Indian removal policy of the late 1830s forced Cherokee to forsake their traditional lands east of the Mississippi River and move to Oklahoma in a series of mandatory migrations now widely known as the Trail of Tears. |
