Climbing Black Mesa, Oklahoma

Black Mesa exists because it’s the sole small area of Oklahoma that has a history of volcanism, As a result, the mesa’s table-top plateau has what Douglas Butler in his book, A Walk Atop America, has described as a “black volcanic cap” that has stopped the mesa from eroding, and as I climbed up towards Black Mesa’s summit plateau, I took this photograph of some of the basalt rocks on its slopes.
