As this map of northern Spain shows, there are many routes that pilgrims took to get to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. The main one is marked in yellow – it’s called the camino francés (the French way) because for centuries pilgrims making their way from France crossed the Pyrenees near Roncesvalles and then walked via Pamplona, Burgos, León, and Villafranca del Bierzo to Santiago de Compostela. |
